Solar, with 965 patents, was the No. 1 technology, overtaking fuel cells. And each year, the technology commands a greater share of patent activity:

Image credit: Clean Energy Patent Growth Index.

The United States was, by far, the No. 1 awarded country, with 556 of those 965 patents (56%). The United States’ proportion of solar patents (56%) outsized its proportion of non-solar clean energy patents (45% ex-solar). Japan, projected to be 2014’s No. 2 solar market, came in second with 107 patents (17%) awarded. China, 2014’s No. 1 projected solar market, amassed just 18 patents in 5th place. Germany, to which the solar industry owes much for its rate of advancement, placed 4th.

Potential home-court advantage aside, the numbers indicate the U.S. is and will continue to be the hub for solar innovation, which is why SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) warrant consideration for any solar investor. SunPower, which touts the highest-efficiency commercially available panels has long demonstrated its R&D prowess. In 2013, SunPower took home second solar prize with 28 patents awarded (compared to 10 for First Solar).

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) — Stocks in Japan climbed at the start of trade Tuesday, as U.S. dollar strength against the yen aided the export-oriented market. The Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) advanced 1% to 14,431.03, and the broader Topix rose 1.5% to 1,201.63, with the greenback moving back above the 楼102 level versus Japan’s currency. Affymax, Inc. was founded in 2001 and is based in Palo Alto, California.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Kanak Kanti De]

Amgen needed an Onyx-like acquisition badly. For one, sales of Aranesp and Epogen, its flagship drugs for anemia, are dropping on concerns of safety, and loss of monopoly in 2012 to Affymax (AFFY), which received FDA approval for a rival anemia drug. (Note though, that after Omontys was recalled this year, that problem is resolved for Amgen.) Secondly, four of its top selling products go off patent in 2015.

  • [By Alpha Exposure]

Investors in Affymax (AFFY) would like you to believe that Omontys will make a miraculous comeback and that Affymax will be a major winner. My belief is that the last AFFY article contained multiple factual errors that when refuted show that the future for Omontys is in fact dire. At the conclusion of this article all doubt should be removed regarding the low likelihood that Omontys returns to market.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Tim Melvin]

The safe and cheap undervalued stocks will go right up, but your chances of being destroyed when the party is over are diminished. Stocks like Richardson Electronics (RELL) and Transworld Entertainment (TWMC) have the ability to go up as the market bubbles higher but their asset value will act as sort of a floor in a decline.

Top 10 Gas Utility Companies For 2015

Although we don’t believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes — just in case they’re material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of ACADIA Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD  ) , a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, skyrocketed as much as 54% after it announced that it was filing an accelerated new drug application for Pimavanserin after discussions with the Food and Drug Administration.

So what: Pimavanserin, an experimental anti-psychosis drug for people with Parkinson’s disease, breezed through its late-stage clinical trial, meeting the primary endpoint of “highly significant antipsychotic activity,” and also meeting the secondary endpoint of improved motoric tolerability. ACADIA had been planning to run a confirmatory phase 3 trial, which it planned to begin enrolling patients in this quarter. However, the data thus far, and the discussion between the FDA and ACADIA, warranted an early drug submission.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Robert Half International’s competitive position could be.

After all, catching and doing something about cancer early on is critical to increase survival rates and bring down the cost of treatment. With that in mind, here are three small cap cancer diagnostic stocks helping to lead the fight to diagnose and stop cancer:

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

That should lead to better economics for natural gas companies and accompany increasing drilling activity. You could invest in the companies holding the natural gas or pumping the oil, but with so many to choose from it could be difficult to narrow down your decision. Investors looking to play the resurgence in American hydrocarbons may want to consider CARBO Ceramics (NYSE: CRR  ) — the world’s largest manufacturer of ceramic proppants — which is one of the companies enabling the energy renaissance. Here are three opportunities that await investors.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

At its core, CARBO Ceramics (CRR) manufactures synthetic proppants used in oil and gas drilling. The takeaway for E&P firms willing to cough up the extra bucks for artificial sand is that they are able to squeeze out more natural gas and shale oil from wells using CRRs products — about 20% more. That extra production, especially given the high price for oil, can mean the difference between whether a project is profitable or not.

Hot Canadian Stocks To Own For 2015

Last February independent oil & gas company Endeavour International Corp. (NYSE: END) initiated a strategic review to help it further enhance shareholder value. The company needed the help. Its size works against it. At the time of its announcement, the companys market cap was just around $225 million.

The strategic review boosted the share price back over $7, but Mondays announcement that the strategic review resulted in essentially no change has hit shareholder value in a negative way. Endeavour said its board has determined that it is [in] the best interests of shareholders to retain and exploit its existing asset base. To further that plan the company is closing its London offices and its executive v-p for international operations is gone.

Endeavor owns assets onshore in the U.S. and in the U.K. region of the North Sea. The company expects to begin production imminently at the Rochelle field which will be operated by Nexen, the former Canadian firm that was acquired by Chinas Cnooc Ltd. (NYSE: CEO) earlier this year.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Vanina Egea]

It is in that sense that railroad companies have turned into a key link in the wheat production chain. Hence, Canada National Railway (CNI) is under heavy pressure to deliver, under a context aggravated by additional successes. Most importantly, gurus seem to have lost faith on the company, and those with the largest position continue to reduce their holdings.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

This is the latest in a string of derailments involving trains moving crude oil from North Dakota to market. A Canadian National Railway Co. (NYSE: CNI) derailed and 4 cars carrying crude oil and 9 cars carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) caught fire about 50 miles west of Edmonton, Alberta, in early October. There were no injuries in that incident either, although all 100 people living a nearby town were evacuated.

  • [By Aaron Levitt]

The first whistle stop for investors could be Canadian National (CNI). As the owner of the two trains that collided in North Dakota, CNI shares fell pretty hard on the crude-by-rail accident and aftermath. However, Canadian National is the largest operator of railways in Canada, giving it unprecedented access to not only Bakken-based crude-by-rail shipments, but oil sands shipments as well. And that makes it one of the best railroad stocks to consider.

Gold stocks have been hit particularly hard so far this year. Investors in gold miners such as Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) and Yamana Gold (NYSE: AUY  ) have been crushed, with the stocks down by 34% and 45%, respectively. The big culprit here is that gold has completely lost its luster with investors. The shiny metal fell to a three-year low of under $1,200 an ounce. In the second quarter alone, the price of gold dropped by more than $400 an ounce, a 25% plunge. The following chart shows just how bad it’s been for gold miners.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Among holdings in which GMT Capital increased its stake was Canada-based uranium specialist Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) . The company’s business is expected to improve as gas and coal prices eventually rise, and also due to new nuclear plants being built. My colleague Sean Williams likes Cameco’s transparency, expects higher uranium prices, and notes that China is also expected to demand more uranium over time. Some see the stock having a fair chance to appreciate substantially.

The biggest worry that some investors have about Pengrowth is that its dividend is large compared to its earnings. Although extraordinary measures have helped Pengrowth and Enerplus (NYSE: ERF  ) sustain payouts at levels that were last reduced in the middle of 2012, both companies could eventually see further pressure on their payouts in future.
