Management matters — especially when it comes to investing in mortgage REITs.
This week at the Barclays Capital Global Financials Conference, droves of CEOs, CFOs, and CIOs trotted on stage to address a room full of eager analysts. One of the lone mREITs represented was Two Harbors (NYSE: TWO ) . CEO Tom Siering and CIO Bill Roth weighed in on the current environment.
After years of fat dividends and stock price appreciation, investors’ interest in mREITs has spiked as most firms have seen their stock-price in free-fall since early May. Two Harbors has been able to weather some of the pain via its unique and active management strategy. With other major industry players like Annaly Capital Management and American Capital Agency not presenting at the conference, let’s look at three comments from Two Harbors’ management that shed light on the firm and the industry as a whole.

- [By Geoff Gannon] is trading around book value your next step is to figure out how book value is calculated.
The reason a company trading below book value is interesting has to do with accounting. In the U.S., you dont mark up the book value of land and many other potentially valuable assets just because you have evidence like an appraisal, comparable sale, etc. that the market value is now higher than your original cost.
So, there will be situations where knowing how a company accounts for its assets and knowing the stock trades for less than book value can help direct you to companies selling for less than they are worth.
DreamWorks is a movie studio. So it is using a rather subjective estimate of the ultimate revenue a movie will produce. It is then amortizing the cost of the movie as revenue comes in to the company in proportion to the percentage of revenue this represents relative to expected total revenue the movie will produce.
For very old movies, it s actually a little different. And for flops its different. DreamWorks can write off flops. And it cant expect the ultimate revenue for a movie to be higher to the extent such revenue comes more than 10 years after the films release.
In other words, DreamWorks has to fully amortize a movie within 10 years and disregard the value an 11-year-old movie might have.
This is explained in a note to the companys 10-K. It is very important for Ben Graham-type investors to read all these notes carefully but especially the notes on depreciation and amortization:
Once a film, television special/series or live performance is released, capitalized productions costs are amortized and participations and residual costs are accrued on an individual title basis in the proportion that the revenue during the period for each title (Current Revenue) bears to the estimated remaining total revenue to be recognized from all sources for each title (Ultimate Revenue). Another under-$10 biopharmaceutical player that’s starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Aastrom Biosciences (ASTM), which is a regenerative medicine company focused on the development of cell therapies to repair or regenerate damaged or diseased tissues. This stock has trended modestly lower over the last three months, with shares off by 4.9%.
If you take a look at the chart for Aastrom Biosciences, you’ll notice that this stock just recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $3.16 to $3.14 a share over the last month and change. Following that bottom, shares of ASTM have started to spike higher and move back above its 50-day moving average of $3.58 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ASTM within range of triggering a big breakout trade.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ASTM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 140,540 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ASTM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.25 to $6.80 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ASTM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-zone from last August that started at $12 a share.
Traders can look to buy ASTM off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $3.58 a share. One can also buy ASTM off strength once it starts to clear $4.50 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

With just a quick glance, Aastrom Biosciences Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTM) doesn’t look like any less of a disaster today than it did a week ago, a month ago, or even a year ago. But, the longer you look at ASTM, the more it seems it may have already hit its ultimate bottom, and is now biding its time to start the rebound.

In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven’t materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Accuride (NYSE: ACW ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company’s inventory growth to sales growth. How is Accuride doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 14.3%, and inventory decreased 30.5%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue dropped 28.6%, and inventory dropped 30.5%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks healthy. Revenue grew 9.2%, and inventory dropped 6.1%.
